Mission and Objectives:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in about 170 countries and territories, aiming to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality, and promote inclusive development. In Guyana, UNDP focuses on implementing projects aligned with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Programme Support Officer will contribute to UNDP's efforts in climate action and environmental management in Guyana.

Context:

UNDP in Guyana supports various initiatives related to climate action and environmental resilience. The country's vulnerability to climate change necessitates a strong focus on these areas. The Programme Support Officer will assist in implementing existing projects and identifying opportunities to expand UNDP's impact in climate change and environmental initiatives.

Task Description:

Under the supervision of the Resident Representative, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Analyze the local context and develop policy options for engagement with national partners.
  • Provide technical guidance to the Programme Team and support project design and implementation.
  • Assist in developing concept notes and project proposals, with a focus on climate change/environmental initiatives.
  • Streamline gender mainstreaming and climate change/environmental response across development programming.
  • Strengthen the integration of climate change/environmental considerations in programme and operational management.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age: 27 - 80
  • Nationality: Candidates must be Spanish nationals.
  • Required Experience: 3 years in climate change/environmental policy/programming or research, or programme/project management with a focus on climate change/environment.
  • Area(s) of Expertise: Development programmes, Energy and environment, Natural and life sciences
  • Languages: Fluent in English
  • Required Education Level: Master's degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Biodiversity, Climate Change Studies, Natural Resource Management, or related field

Living Conditions and Remarks:

The UN Volunteer will primarily be based in Georgetown but may undertake field missions occasionally. Guyana offers a unique blend of Caribbean and South American culture and history. The country is known for its pristine rainforests, rivers, and diverse population. Security is generally rated level 2 for coastland and level 1 for hinterland. Precautions should be taken to ensure personal safety and security.

UNV Contract Conditions:

UN Volunteers will receive a living allowance, health insurance, life insurance, final repatriation, and resettlement allowance. International UN Expert Volunteers will also receive an expertise differential. Specific entitlements may vary based on UNV policies.
